VIDEO: How to make vegetarian turnip cake

Happy Year of the Rooster all! 🙂 As it’s customary to eat turnip cake for CNY, we partnered up with Coby at VegMatters to make a vegetarian turnip cake!

Making it yourself has many advantages — you can control the amount of starch that goes in, how chunky your ingredients will be, and of course, reduce the amount of fat and animal products that go in (great if you’re trying to cut down on meat consumption)!

What you’ll need:

  • 1 turnip
  • 6 dried mushrooms
  • 1/2 carrot
  • 1 cup rice flour
  • 3 tbsp cornstarch
  • water

Check out the video above for step-by-step instructions (apologies for the cheesy music)! The turnip should be cooked till translucent before adding the rice flour mixture, and if you’d like a more sturdy cake that will hold up in blocks, just add more rice flour mixture. After steaming the cake, you can either eat it fresh, or fry it up after it’s cooled off with some XO sauce.

  1. We made our own turnip cake for a few years, but really the effort involved doesn’t seem to be worth the extra flavour or anything. Unless you need something like meat-free I guess. I found doing my own dragon boat dumplings to be more interesting, it is easy to make ones much better than you buy. At least locally where we live. Though the wrapping technique takes a lot of getting used to!
