Starting out as a part of Warrior Hong Kong in Fortress Hill, LIGHTS//OUT has recently moved out into a space of its own in Sheung Wan, conveniently located just minutes away from the MTR station.

Positioning themselves as a boxing club, they offer a workout that is a combination of XYZ’s nightclub-like environment and HIT45’s hybrid format, but instead of circuits or open space, you alternate between your own designated boxing and strength training stations between sets.

The workout starts you off at either the strength station, where you’ll be led through two rounds of exercises with dumbbells, a medicine ball or just bodyweight; or you’ll begin at the cardio-heavy boxing station, where you’ll punch the huge hanging sandbag according to a routine shown to you by the instructor for two rounds. Then, you switch, in total doing 8 rounds of work, 4 at each station.

For first-timers, trying to remember the exercises and routines, as well as trying to keep up with switching stations, may pose a bit of challenge even for seasoned circuit training lovers. However, the heart-thumping music and the enthusiasm and attention of the trainer more than makes up for the format.

Though I’m no boxing fan, I can imagine, and know quite a few people, who really enjoy the workout and come back time and time again. If you’re looking to switch up your boxing or body combat routines, this is a fantastic alternative, complete with beautiful changing rooms and amenities.

You’ll like this class if: you enjoy boxing, a dark workout environment and working out to loud music

You might not like this class if: you prefer a slower workout pace, or dislike interval training

Gym facilities: Showers, lockers, hairdryers, extra amenities like facial wipes and moisturizer, towels (small and large), shampoo, conditioner, body wash, water refill station

Good to know: You must bring your own hand wraps, or you can purchase your own pair of their Easy Wraps for HK$120 a pair. They also have a personal training space if you want a more tailored or traditional program.
