Review: Xtreme Lashes In The Gym

Lash extensions are nothing new – you might even say they’re the norm by now – but for a lash extension newbie like me, I’ve only ever had them done twice (now thrice) in my life. The first time wasn’t a great experience, as my overzealous picking at my waterline landed me with an eye infection, and I was put off ever since.

Recently, I had the chance to try out Xtreme Lashes Hong Kong, which is known for its high-quality, Hollywood-esque lashes. The company is founded by Jo Mousselli, a former pediatric ICU nurse at Texas Children’s Hospital who applied her medical and scientific knowledge to developing Xtreme Lashes. Today, her homegrown brand is in over 40 countries and its academy has trained 15,000 “lash stylists” worldwide (and counting).

In Hong Kong, Xtreme Lashes has two salons – one in Central and the other at K11 Beauty in Tsim Sha Tsui – making it ultra-convenient to get your lashes done.

The consultation

Right before my lash appointment at Xtreme Lashes Hong Kong‘s Central salon on Wellington Street, I sat down with my lash stylist to discuss the ideal lash extensions for me based on my eye shape and lifestyle. The options were to go for a classic set, which is approximately 70-100 lashes per eye, or one with more volume (aka. a thicker set of lashes.)

Since I work out almost daily, we decided on a practical set of lashes that weren’t going to be too dramatic-looking at the gym, or on a no-makeup day. I really appreciated that Xtreme Lashes’ treatments are customised to each person instead of a one-size-fits-all approach.

The treatment

The treatment took place in a dimly lit treatment room, where I laid down and let the lash stylist work her magic. Since it would take around 60-90 minutes, I was told to relax and take a little beauty nap. It didn’t take long for me to fall asleep as the stylist chose each lash based on its length, thickness, curvature and colour, and meticulously applied them one-by-one onto my natural eyelashes.

To be honest, I was slightly worried about how they’d turn out (due to my disappointing experience before), but I tried to sleep off my worries. Before I knew it, I could feel a small fan blowing on my eyelashes as the stylist combed through my new lashes – making me feel like a little doll.

The results

I have to say, I was really happy with my Xtreme Lashes! As you can see from the before-and-after photo, they did a great job in using the lash extensions to open up my eyes and create a natural yet noticeable difference.

Another plus was how lightweight they were – unlike the first time that I had my lashes done when they felt too long, curved and kept getting in the way of my vision.

How long did they last? I was really careful with not rubbing my eyes or picking at the lashes, and even more careful with removing eye makeup by not touching the lashes at all during the following weeks and months – and I’m happy to report that they lasted a whole two months! Of course, when I finally started rubbing them properly by then, the lashes fell off like Christmas tree needles (but that was already after eight weeks of wear.)

How about at the gym? I did work out with the lash extensions regularly and loved how I didn’t have to deal with panda eyes anymore (which is what I normally get when I wear mascara at the gym). Of course, I was really careful not to touch my eyes during the workouts and blotted sweat away before it had a chance to drip onto my eyes. Yes, it’s a little more work but worth it if you want them to last!

Verdict

Whether you’re active or not, lash extensions are awesome if you want to a) look super cute, b) save time getting ready in the morning AND c) avoid those “panda eye” dark under-circles that can result from mascara melting off from the heat, sweat, or heavy workout.

Xtreme Lashes impressed me with their professionalism and quality of lashes, as well as the skill of their lash stylists on making sure the extensions fit my eyes. Although they are more on the premium side and slightly more expensive than some of the other lash extension boutiques in Hong Kong, the results are worth it. Plus, they lasted for two whole months!

Extra comparison: After my set of Xtreme Lashes fell off, I decided to try another lash boutique while I was on holiday in Vancouver, Canada, and you can see the difference below:

I couldn’t quite put my finger on it at the time, but when you see the pictures side-by-side, it’s clear that Xtreme Lashes did a much better job at creating a denser, more shapely set of lashes that flattered my eye shape.

After this experience, I can wholeheartedly recommend not just getting lash extensions, but getting them done at Xtreme Lashes Hong Kong.
